The new website for HIRUGANO LAPLAND — ten private cottages on the Hirugano Highlands in Gujo City, Gifu — is now live. Rates and facilities for all ten villas, the five villas where dogs are welcome, seasonal photography, and booking straight from the availability calendar are all here, in Japanese, English and Russian.
HIRUGANO LAPLAND is a village of ten whole-house villas on the Hirugano plateau, 900 metres above sea level. Each villa is two storeys and 82㎡, with an open atrium above the living room, and sleeps up to six. Every villa has a kitchen and a barbecue terrace, and we are open all year, from ¥40,000 per night. Nagoya is about 90 minutes away by car, and the Hirugano Kogen smart interchange on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway is just down the road.
Each villa carries the name of one of Santa’s reindeer. Five stand on either side of Santa’s Path, with a sleigh photo spot at the far end. This is Santa’s home in Japan, and while you stay, you are his neighbour. Floor plans, capacity and rates for each villa are on the Ten villas page.
Enter your dates and the number of guests, and the site shows you which villas are free, with an indicative price, and takes you straight to a booking request. The availability calendar updates itself from real bookings, so you will not discover that a date is full only after writing to us. Seasonal rates and the charges for extra guests and dogs are all set out under Rates.
Five of the ten villas — Rudolph, Dasher, Prancer, Comet and Donner — welcome dogs. Up to two dogs per villa, priced separately for small and large breeds. The plateau stays cool through the summer, which makes it easy country to travel in with a dog. See Dogs & pets for the details.
What does Santa do for the rest of the year? The Seasons page follows the plateau through skunk cabbage and moss phlox in spring, river days and long dusks in summer, autumn colour, and a winter that brings up to three metres of snow. Five ski areas, each with its own character, are close by, along with sledding, tubing and snowmobiling. Every villa has underfloor heating and a gas heater, so the snow stays outside.
