From Nagoya, take the Meishin and then the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway and leave at the Hirugano Kogen smart interchange. The village is close by, and one of the pleasures of this location is how little ordinary road there is once you are off the expressway.
One thing to know: the smart interchange is ETC-only. Without an ETC unit you will need to leave at Shirotori (or Shokawa, coming from the north) and take Route 156. Car navigation finds “Hirugano Kogen” reliably, but please use the exact address and landmarks in the directions we send after booking.
Gifu Bus runs the Nagoya–Gujo–Hirugano line between the Meitetsu Bus Center and Hirugano all year: 124.7km, about 2 hours 29 minutes outbound, ¥2,800 for adults and ¥1,400 for children. It calls at Kakamigahara, Seki, Mino, Gujo Minami, Gujo Hachiman Castle Town Plaza and Bokka no Sato along the way.
The last stop is Hirugano Kogen Ski Resort (Hirugano Picnic Garden). Please ask us when you book about getting from the bus stop to the village. Timetables change with the season, so check the current one on the Gifu Bus website.
Get off at Gujo Hachiman Castle Town Plaza and you can walk the old castle town and its water channels before continuing up to the plateau. With no driving to do, the journey becomes part of the trip.
Hirugano receives up to three metres of snow. Between December and March, winter tyres or chains are required on the approach road. If you are renting a car, specify snow tyres at the time of booking.
If you would rather not drive on snow, take the bus. The expressway is cleared, but the local roads up on the plateau can freeze. Leave yourself room in the schedule.
Carry on north and the expressway reaches Shirakawa-go and Hida Takayama. Using the plateau as a base means you can leave your luggage in the villa and make day trips without repacking. Hirugano is close enough to Nagoya for a day out, and rewarding enough to stay several nights.
